Leftover wainscoating from the wall of the women's balcony was slapped together into a rough cabinet, placed against the East wall, and used as the Ark. A scrap of metal, broken off from something else, with a hole in its middle, rotates around a screw through its middle to hold the door shut.
In 1993, during the months of construction to restore the sanctuary, we held services downstairs in the Elmer Lippin Social Hall and used the old ark once again.
Today, the old Ark is on display in the Social Hall, where we use it in our Children's Shabbat Program and it stores the toy scrolls and games used by the Children's Shabbat Program.
